BECAUSE…
In order to make another world possible and another US necessary, the women killed in CD Juarez, Chihuahua Mexico must have justice and the killers put in jail.
Beginning in the 1965 CD Juarez, across El Paso, Texas started seeing assembly plants owned by US and international companies set up shop in the city. As part of the Border Industrialization Program (BIP), the assembly plants, or MAQUILADORA became an ever present EXPLOITER of CHEAP WAGES hiring mostly young women at less than 4 dollars a day, while at the same time utilizing the government to repress any and all labor organizing campaigns, organizations and leaders of workers demanding justice. However, products coming out of maquiladoras had free trade rights paying now taxes, and have freedom of transportation and can cross the international bridges at top speed, but NOT the PEOPLE.
In 1994, January 1st, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) came into being, and provoked the uprising in Chiapas where the NAFTA was denounced as displacing the Indigenous communities from their homelands and taking away their ‘ejido’ land rights. Staring at the same time as NAFTA, young women workers in the maquiladora started being assassinated and their bodies dumped in the deserts surrounding CD Juarez. Hundreds and hundreds of young women were assassinated and the government did NOTHING! More than 500 young women have whose assassinations have been documented have gone unsolved for decades now. This kind of violence and impunity were two new things that came into Mexico with NAFTA or as a result of NAFTA.
THERFORE,
Southwest Workers Union (SWU) proposes that JUSTICE be done immediately for all the women of Juarez!
Southwest Workers Union (SWU) proposes that an independent office be established and paid for by the NAFTA bank to find and persecute all involved in the assassinations,
Southwest Workers Union (SWU) proposes that the maquiladora companies and industrial park owners be liable for law suits by the families of the young women assassinated because of no worker protection policies by the companies who get rich off their labor,
Southwest Workers Union (SWU) proposes the ‘suspension’ of the NAFTA provisions until justice is done for the young women of Juarez!
Southwest Workers Union (SWU) proposes that the US-Mexico government identify and post a memorial for all the young women assassinated in CD Juarez,
Southwest Workers Union (SWU) proposes International Women’s day as a day of ACTION, solidarity and struggle for JUSTICE for the women of Juarez!
